It's been quite a while since I've posted here. I'm doing great and still quilting lots but demands on time seem to be ever increasing! There are just so many online social places to be these days and I decided to try out Instagram as my main place for a while. I'm @quiltsbyemily and I'd LOVE to follow you too....leave a comment and let me know where I can find you! :)

I did want to share something I just finished up last week.
Several years ago I made a table runner. I've had lots of requests for the pattern and I started writing up instructions for it quite a while ago but ran into a few snags. I had a recent request to sew one of these up for someone so I took the opportunity to buckle down and finish writing it! Use coupon code NEWPATTERN to get $2 off this pattern in my Etsy shop now thru the end of October.
P.S. I'm still following blogs but don't comment much because I seem to always get an error, especially on Blogger, go figure! But just know that I truly enjoy seeing everything that you all create! so inspiring!mlehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03060971785008244486noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27242889.post-42934520400255928542015-03-23T10:30:00.000-05:002015-03-23T10:30:00.254-05:00Aztec Chevron Quilt + {new pattern}I'm so excited to show you a new quilt pattern I've been working on!
It's a really fun, geometric chevron pattern. So perfect for showing off special fabrics. I was inspired by a design on a beach towel of all things!

I had originally picked out the teal, peachy pink, mustard and mint color scheme but just felt there was something missing. Once I added in the Wild & Free arrows print and the Denyse Schmidt Chicopee print all was right with the world!
Love this quilt so much! This is the throw size which is about 54"x72". Way back when I started testing ideas for the pattern I made a baby size which I never blogged about but you can see on Flickr. I'm sure I'll be making more of these since it's such a quick and easy pattern to sew up!
Spa style colors were requested with full license to choose any pattern I think best. It didn't take me long to decide on a postage stamp quilt (very similar to this one). I just think it will be perfect and will almost mimic the mosaic tile that a lot of spas have. Can't wait to see it!
Got all my light and dark fabrics pulled.

But before I get to cutting...

...I need to bind this baby up! Totally in love with how this is looking and can't wait to show you the finished product. Going to have a little pattern for this one too.
Can't wait to see how yours turn out!

A little while back I fell in love with a fabric collection, Priory Square. I must have been dreaming of spring! So I know I'm not alone here but let's be honest...I don't need to buy another fabric collection. So what I did was try to recreate the color palette of Priory Square with fabrics I already had. The pink I used isn't quite the same but overall I'm pleased with how it turned out.

I went with the tried and true Fenced In pattern by Elizabeth Hartman using Essex Linen in Flax for the background.

I did order some Priory Square fabrics for the back. I don't use a lot of large scale florals but I really do love this one! Very bright and cheerful.
It is so easy and fun to make I though some of you might like to whip one up too so I have a quick tutorial made up.
Wonky Stripes is the most unoriginal name but I am at a loss....what would you name it?

This quilt ended up being 37.5" by 48".
You'll need at least 10 fat quarters.
Cut 40 8"x8" squares from your fabrics.

Stack a variety of 4 squares, making sure that the top and bottom squares are not the same color (because they will be touching each other when you sew them into blocks).

Make 3 cuts at slightly wonky angles so that you have 4 stacks of strips. Make sure to keep the stacks in the order you cut them in.

Next, rearrange the layers so you can sew them together into blocks.

Now sew together the strips in the order you see them from left to right.

One thing to take note of when you're sewing the strips together. Because you are sewing angled pieces, you need to overlap the points where the seam allowance is.

You'll end up with 4 finished blocks that are 8"x6.5".

After all the blocks are pieced, you can arrange them (with the blocks turned horizontal) 5 blocks across and 8 blocks down. Finally, sew the blocks into 5 vertical columns and then sew the columns together. Done!

I'm working on a version of this with girly colors as you can above. I can't wait to see how it turns out!mlehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03060971785008244486noreply@blogger.com13tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27242889.post-65361542231326404352015-02-06T14:10:00.002-06:002015-02-06T14:10:56.054-06:00inspiration overloadWell January went by fast!
I'm in the midst of finishing up a few little baby quilts right now and have been trying to plan my next project. I actually started to feel a little "stuck". There is just so much inspiration out there and lots of patterns and fabrics I want to try that I don't know which way to go! My Pinterest board for quilt inspiration has been growing like crazy the last few weeks. So has my Flickr favs.

Yesterday, I wrote down a list of quilts I want to make and what fabrics I want to use, etc.
Here are a couple of things that are on my definite to-do list:

Fancy Fox pillow for my son!

A Pacific Crest quilt from Beyond Neutral book (downloaded it on the iPad a few weeks ago; love lots of the designs in it!)

and lastly, I am wild about this fabric combo:

Not a 100% sure what pattern I'll use yet but I just love the bright red against the Essex Yarn-dyed Black again the Wild and Free plaid fabric. Maybe add a little mustard in too.

Does this ever happen to you? You're all ready to sew and make something but you just don't know what to start with?mlehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03060971785008244486noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27242889.post-19547414865677294552015-01-19T14:51:00.000-06:002015-01-19T14:51:08.079-06:00Vintage Style Bowtie QuiltHey guys! It's Monday, hope you're week is off to a great start!

I've got some very mediocre, boring brick wall photos of a really GORGEOUS quilt! I do want to step up my photography skills but I always end up taking the quick and easy way out by snapping the same old pics.

This quilt I love! I was totally inspired by this vintage bowtie quilt I saw on Pinterest.

Denyse Schmidt fabrics are so perfect in a quilt like this. Modern but vintage all at the same time. I made 7" bowtie blocks using mostly Hadley fabrics with a few solids and Katie Jump Rope prints mixed in.

Even the backing is a Denyse Schmidt fabric from JoAnn's.

This quilt really makes me smile!mlehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03060971785008244486noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27242889.post-38234438049101826232015-01-08T14:45:00.000-06:002015-01-08T14:45:28.563-06:00a quilter's best friend...Quilters, you will know this, when your iron is in danger of dying you start to panic! at least that is what I did.

I've had this Sunbeam Steam Master (model 4228) for about 5 years and used it heavily during that time. It actually did break a year or so ago (the cord at the base became loose and wires weren't connecting) but my super hubby fixed it. It has been a great iron! I'll be honest, I didn't treat it the best either. I always left water in the tank and only used tap water (distilled is always recommended). But aside from a bit of drippiness now and then I was very happy with the steam it made and the heat it produced. But sadly, we all know that irons don't last forever...

<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/7526162@N07/15612905563" title="Old iron...."shut down" by Emily, on Flickr"><img alt="Old iron...."shut down"" height="500" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7468/15612905563_826fbfcb33.jpg" width="376" />
My son was kind enough to label it "shut down" for me.

So last month I started researching irons. Luckily, my Sunbeam was still working but I didn't want to take the chance of being without and iron (because no iron, no quilting!).
What I concluded is that picking an iron is basically a crapshoot. It's hit or miss! There are good and bad reviews for every iron out there (if you've ever shopped for irons on Amazon and read the reviews you'll know what I'm talking about.

I settled on a Reliable Velocity V50 and ordered it from Aamzon.
I'll be honest. This thing is really different from my other iron. It has a little motor that produces continuous steam and it makes a loud humming sound when you have it on (kind of unnerving at first). The good part is that you can turn the steam off and on at the easy touch of a button. So I just turn the steam on when I'm actually ironing something and then turn it off when I set the iron back down. And this sucker gets nice and hot too!

I've been using it for almost a month now and at first I didn't like it but after a short while I started getting used to it because this thing really works great!
When you iron a seam, it stays ironed FLAT! Case in point:

The picture is not as impressive as in real life but that center seam is so flat and crisp! It's awesome.

A little warning though, the steam it produces is some serious steam! watch those fingers, ouch! Oh and, I'm trying my best to treat this iron well so I'm using only distilled water. This thing is a water hog! It goes through a TON of water to make all that steam. But for me, the most important thing is that it irons seams nice and flat. So, with that, I'm really happy with it!mlehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03060971785008244486noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27242889.post-4738708613256097152015-01-03T11:00:00.001-06:002015-01-03T11:00:23.089-06:00Quilts of 2014Since this year felt like it just flew by, I was curious to see all the quilts I had made. My mosaic turned out really tiny for some reason but I spent all that time on it and didn't want to redo it. All the original pictures are on Flickr if you want a larger look at them. :)
Turns out, I made more than I had thought! In fact, I think about 8 of these never made it to the blog.

I don't think I was as creative this year with my patterns. As you can see, I repeated a lot! Two "Love" quilts (Tula Pink pattern), 2 Tango quilts (a Cluck Cluck Sew pattern), 5! Optimism quilts (3 baby size, 2 throw size) and 2 Archaeology quilts. But I really loved making all of these and sometimes keeping it simple can be so enjoyable and rewarding!

My only goal for this year quilting-wise is to keep making things I love! Oh and try to take better pictures.
So here's to 2015! I hope the new year brings you much creative joy!mlehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03060971785008244486noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27242889.post-58585854989160721632014-12-31T13:14:00.001-06:002014-12-31T13:14:34.097-06:00sampler blocksHappy New Year's Eve!

We had a lovely Christmas, I hope you did too.
This past week I've been blissfully working on my Farmer's Wife Sampler Quilt.

You can click the pictures to see the block names and numbers on Flickr.
I've got 36 blocks now!

I started these blocks exactly 3 years ago. I've still got a ways to go but it would be really cool to try to finish it by the end of this coming new year.
Have a happy new year!mlehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03060971785008244486noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27242889.post-68729441110149629282014-12-22T15:43:00.002-06:002014-12-22T15:43:39.765-06:00Postage Stamp QuiltThis is most probably my last quilt to be finished in 2014 and boy, it's got to be one of my favorites! As a gift for my sister I'm happy that I'll get to see it often :) It's also a surprise for her, she has no idea I've been making a quilt for her.

I used the Snapshots pattern from the book The Practical Guide to Patchwork. It's just a basic postage stamp quilt but I used a lot of different fabrics to give it a scrappy-ish look.

I used so many fabrics in this quilt! I was going for a color scheme of navy, coral, turquoise, yellow, gray and lots of low volume prints.

My favorite quilting ever! overlapping scallops.

The back is a large piece from Leah Duncan's Meadow collection plus some random scraps.

I know my sister is going to love it! Christmas is just a few days away, can't wait!mlehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03060971785008244486noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27242889.post-61820611628913623632014-12-19T10:45:00.000-06:002014-12-19T10:45:21.784-06:0012-Patch QuiltHappy Friday before Christmas!!!
I'm working on one last gift item that I'll show you in a few days. How about you? all ready or still scrambling? I'm usually scrambling with last minute gift making at this point but this year I took it easy and am only making one thing.

Anyway, I have a super cute finish to show.

I was completely inspired by this little mini quilt I saw on Flickr. These blocks are perfect for digging into those scraps! And they are SUPER quick to boot. Love them, I could totally make another quilts worth of these blocks.

For the back I finally used up a yard of Denyse Schmidt plaid I'd been saving for a long time.

The finished size of this quilt came out to about 39"x52".

We had a wonderful Thanksgiving with family up in Colorado last week, the weather was beautiful! And part of the reason I was able to enjoy it so much was I had just completed an order for 2 lap quilts.

The customer requested quilts for her 2 young sons and the amazing part is she provided all the fabrics (the really good stuff too!) so all I had to do was sew it up. She said her sons each picked their own fabrics. These boys have quite the eye for color!
These were a lot of fun to work on!
I'm cutting into fabrics a Christmas gift quilt today so I'll share more on that soon! Anyone else making a quilt for a Christmas gift?mlehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03060971785008244486noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27242889.post-48102569244082639392014-10-24T15:29:00.001-05:002014-10-24T15:30:26.749-05:00Blogger's Quilt Festival Fall 2014I am woefully behind showing you quilts that I've finished recently but thankfully the fall Blogger's Quilt Festival is going on so I was motivated to post one up for you.

I'm entering this quilt into the Original Designs category. Thanks to a low volume background and a mix of bright triangles, this quilt has quite a different look than my original Archaeology Quilt I made.

Back in August I had just gotten a few of the new Cotton + Steel fabrics and was inspired to cut into them right away. I added a few other fabrics that really compliment them (from Denyse Schmidt, Joel Dewberry, Lizzy House and Carolyn Friedlander).

I love the funky vibe the back has. I was sad to use the last of my Anna Maria Horner Field Study fabric but it was perfect.
I started mine in December of 2011. I just checked and the last block I made was in December 2013! yikes!
I've wanted to work on it but have just had too many other pressing projects going on. And I'd kind of forgotten about it. I was determined to make a block or two today.

This is the poor little block made nearly 10 months ago but never documented. #92 Streak of Lightning

Today, I went for the first easy block I flipped to in the book. #48 Homeward Bound

And #111 Wrench
Boy, I feel so much better having made a little progress. I really, really want to finish this quilt someday soon.
Okay, Carla, your turn now!mlehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03060971785008244486noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27242889.post-6984410477828015102014-10-02T13:45:00.001-05:002014-10-02T13:45:55.903-05:00this weekWell I seem to be in a bit of a blogging slump. Sewing is happening though!
I've got some cell phone pics of what I've been working on this week.

Mr. Scotty Dog came together surprisingly quick! A birthday gift for my niece. Free pattern from Denyse Schmidt.

After some deliberation and calculations I've decided to make both a Vintage Nine-Patch quilt and a Bowtie quilt with my Hadley fabrics. I'm going to make both quilts a smallish lap size and with a few additional fabrics it should be no problem.
These vintage nine patch blocks are small for me (6" finshed) and I was hoping there was going to be some quick method of sewing them up but no such luck. These could be time consuming but I think the result will be worth it.

I'm going with the 7" finished blocks for the bowties. These are pretty fun to make!

And today I'm going to finish the back and baste up this Double Plus quilt for a customer. The day is slipping by so I'd better hop to it!
Last week my mom took me birthday shopping and I came home with these FQs from Denyse Schmidt's Hadley collection.

I really want to make a vintage style quilt with these and I've been mulling over pattern options.
A postage stamp quilt like this one or this one?
This Vintage Nine Patch pattern maybe?
Or a truly vintage bow-tie pattern like this one?

Good Stitches {finished quilt}Well howdy! I have lots to show off these days I just haven't managed to get it up on the blog.

I'll start with this quilt I just finished yesterday. Thanks to the ladies in the Heal Circle of do. Good Stitches this quilt came together beautifully (our circle supports hospice)!
June was my month to pick a pattern and put together the quilt. I choose the Square Deal pattern from the book, Block Party (it's more of a recipe than a quilt pattern).

I hope it will put a smile on someone's face!
I needed something quick and easy so I went with my tried and true Market Street pattern. I finished this quilt about 3 weeks ago but it took me a while to get some decent pictures of it.
I really love how the Essex Linen (flax color) breaks up the color and gives it an earthy feel.
Love this fabric line! I'm sooooooo sad that I'm almost out of that Field Study in mustard fabric that goes so well with this line. I've searched high and low and it is no where to be found online. I guess that's how it goes.mlehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03060971785008244486noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27242889.post-26925492491611811552014-07-28T10:08:00.000-05:002014-07-28T10:08:07.540-05:00quilt therapy I'm back! My surgery went really well and I'm recovering a lot faster than I thought I would. I even felt well enough to cut some fabrics for a new quilt yesterday (by the way, you use your core muscles quite a bit when rotary cutting, who knew? you discover these things when your core muscles have been cut into). Being able to play with my fabrics again is so good!
Can't wait to see how this turns out!mlehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03060971785008244486noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27242889.post-81200562673579924112014-07-16T16:02:00.000-05:002014-07-16T16:03:51.214-05:00fabric candyHello! We took a lovely vacation to the family farm in West Virginia over the 4th of July holiday and I've had little time to sew (although I did baste and quilt a finished top, just need to get pictures of it now).

This literally just arrived in my mailbox. Happy, happy!
I pre-ordered a select few of the new Cotton & Steel fabrics from Hawthorne Threads.

There are soooo many great prints in these collections it was hard just to choose a few! As I've been seeing more pictures of the Cotton & Steel fabrics I've decided I need a few of those gorgeous lavendery pinks to add to my stash.

On a very personal note:
I'm keeping this short and sweet since I'm actually preparing for surgery tomorrow. It was back towards the beginning of this blog (7! years ago) that I had my first surgery and was diagnosed with Crohn's disease. Yes, it can be challenging but there are many things worse and I'm fortunate to have excellent health care and a supportive family. We all have something in life that is difficult but those are what pushes us to grow. So I'd love to have your prayers for tomorrow! Thanks and I'll be back soon!mlehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03060971785008244486noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27242889.post-49610270135277597672014-06-26T13:00:00.002-05:002014-06-26T13:01:01.710-05:00Scrappy Quilt #1 done!People always say that these Scrappy Trip Around the World quilts come together relatively quick and I found that to be true for me as well. My least favorite part is ironing the seams of the strips in alternating directions, it's hard not to stretch and make things wonky but in the end it all works out.
I've been branching out a little with my quilting. I tried out sort of a scallop pattern. I absolutely love how it came out! It was really easy and fast to do too.
I'm sure I will give it another go because I really want some of those feathers!

On a very successful and happy note, I made a Cargo Duffle bag last week! I've had it on my must make NOW list since the pattern came out but I never could settle on the fabrics to use. Well, when I saw Anna's tote bag in the Arizona fabrics I knew that was it! I pre-ordered my fabrics and cut into them the day I got them.

I was slightly intimidated by making a duffle bag but I knew how great Anna's patterns are (plus she gives extra tips on her blog). I just took it step by step and had no problems at all! All in all, it took a bit of time but was a lot easier than I thought it would be.
Things aren't going right and frustration builds to the point where you throw everything down in disgust and walk away.
That was me on Saturday, I admit it. I was trying out a paper pieced feather with some scraps and I just could not get it right! I thought I was using large enough pieces but after I would sew a seam the fabric would fall short of the area it needed to cover! (I may have even crumpled it all up - very childish I know)

I've only done paper piecing on a few simple things before so I'm not very experienced. It felt like I was wasting SO MUCH fabric. Is that right?
What a mess! LOL! although I'm still having a hard time laughing about it. I'm actually still pouting. I wanted these to be easy because they are such pretty little feathers.mlehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03060971785008244486noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27242889.post-7167291956756046052014-06-07T17:38:00.000-05:002014-06-07T17:38:15.492-05:00scrap bustin' is now scrap war!Okay, I know some of you experienced scrappy quilt makers were probably laughing pretty hard about me thinking I'd put a dent in my scraps with just that one little quilt. As I was cutting I came to a quick realization that I'd need to take more drastic measures. Scrap war is ON!

So, working bin by bin, I took every long scrap strip I could find and cut strips for a Scrappy Trip Around the World Quilt (tutorial). The only discrimination I made was to leave out browns. Browns not welcome in this quilt, sorry!
I felt like I was cutting for forever but my stacks seem so small! It's interesting to see what colors you are strong in, I had tons of blues followed closely by pinks/oranges, then small stacks of yellows/greens and neutrals.

I ended up with 120 strips to make a good throw size.
The easy part is now done, sewing the strips together.
